Summary:This is a newspaper article from 1890 that is recounting a law passed in the city of Florence in 1827. The law stipulated that three or more slaves gathered together was an unlawful assembly, punishable by whipping. The law also punished masters who allowed their slaves to "trade as freemen" with a monetary fine; slaves who were found trading as freemen were subject to be whipped up to 39 times, at the discretion of the mayor.
