Joseph Armstead (1928-1984) was one of at least seven children--five sons and two daughters--of Clarence (1900-1973) and Mary Louis Chandler (1904-1994) Armstead of Smithsonia, in Lauderdale County. In 1940 the Armsteads, farmers, lived on Cheatham's Ferry Road. Joseph's brother Lawrence (1934-1982) served in the US Army.
