Summary:A June 7, 1917 Florence Herald report on the registration for the draft in Lauderdale County, which showed that out of 690 registrations in the Florence beat, 250 were African-American, and in the Woodland and Smithsonia beats of the bend of the river in Lauderdale, the registration was three black males for every white male. Complete returns were not in however the paper estimated that some 3,000 men registered in Lauderdale County.
