A Thursday, January 7, 1954 *Florence Times* report of the arrest of 35 year-old William "Willie" Lee Wilson of Darby Avenue, Florence, on two warrants charging "malicious injury to property" sworn out by black resident John Hampton, owner of a small cafe in the 100 block of West Alabama Street, where he also lives. Hampton and some others allegedly saw Wilson standing next to Hampton's car with a knife and when they approached, the men noticed Hampton's tires had been slashed. Wilson's knife appeared to have black rubber stains on it and he and possibly an accomplice or accomplices is suspected in a rash of recent tire slashings "within a few blocks of Court Street." |
