Summary:A Wednesday, October 5, 1881 Lauderdale News report that a watch from Florence jeweler Capt. Abraham Brown's store had been found in the possession of African-American Harry McGlofflin (McLaughlin), who allegedly stole it when the clerk briefly left the counter to assist two lady customers in a carriage.It is not known whether McGlofflin was arrested or not, and if so, what happened to him. The papers are silent and no circuit court records have been found. Neither has a "Harry" McGloffin/McLaughlin been found in Lauderdale County records however a "Henry" McGloflen (b. 1840) married Mary Houston (b. ca. 1835) in 1869 and by 1870 had a family of five children with the surname McGloflen ranging in ages from 17 to 3 living in their house. These McGloflens lived on an 18 acre farm valued at $90 in the Gravelly Springs area of western Lauderdale County, the so-called "Bend of the River."
