description Two April, 1881 newspaper articles reporting that RE Petty, Esq., of Leighton, Colbert County had taken shots at an unidentified African-American man who was attempting to rob his corn crib. Thinking he hd killed the man, he approached him and the thief suddenly rose up, snatched the gun out of his hands and fled. Scarps of the man's clothing which were blasted away were later found, but no blood and it was reported that the thief sold the gun to "someone on Mr. Yeatman Moore's place." Nothing more was reported on this story.
