The Law, Crime and Punishment
description A Series of newspaper articles from October and November of 1908 reporting on the activity of "night riders" in the Colbert's Reserve area of western Lauderdale County. The "night riders" had posted signs across Colbert's Reserve warning white farmers and merchants not to have any dealings with or sell merchandise or rent land to, blacks within the Reserve, or "we will call around to see you at a late hour." Subsequently a dozen or so cotton gin fires were reported across the state however after investigation were concluded to be hoaxes. These warnings in Colbert's Reserve were "deplored and regretted generally" and Lauderdale Sheriff Calvin W. Young declared that "the full force of the law will be enforced against disorder of this sort." The Lauderdale County Farmers' Union passed resolutions disapproving and condemning these acts.
