Description
Summary:This is a newspaper article about Ab, or Abe, a free person of color, from 1861. Florence historian Lee Freeman notes: "In this article a "crippled free colored man" named "Ab" (Abe?) who "has to go on crutches," attempted to join Capt. J. Butler Houston's Co D, 9th AL Inf CSA company which had just left Lauderdale County on Monday. I don't know who this "Ab" was (I've been looking unsuccessfully for information for years), only that by 1860 there was a small community of 44 free people of color in Lauderdale County, of which "Ab" apparently was a member."
