Summary:Captain William Mark Hames was president of the board of directors of the State Normal School for the first 18 years, 1883-1901. A lawyer, he was Captain of Company A, Second Alabama Regiment, in the War Between the States (1861-1865). Hames was also Worshipful Master in Hiram Lodge No. 42 F. & A.M., Jacksonville, Alabama. The State Normal School building, remodeled and enlarged in 1908, was named in his honor, Hames Hall. The original was courtesy of Hiram Lodge N. 42 F. & A.M. and copied by Opal R. Lovett.
