And we are going to talk to her a little bit about her background and some of her experiences as a military wife. To begin with Mrs. Hanback, where and when were you born? Della Hanback: I was born in Lauderdale County, November 4, '26. PH: Okay And where did you live growing up? DH: Oh, Gravely Springs and Waterloo Road. PH: Okay, did you have any brothers and sisters? DH: I had five brothers and three sisters. PH: Who were your parents? DH: Emmitt Smith and Lessie, Tilly Smith. PH: Well tell me how you met Mr. Hanback. DH: My uncle married his sister. So when I'd go to visit he wanted to see me, but he had known me since birth and we lived next door. So he said then I would cry for him to hold me. He remembers but I don't of course. And was uh, I was about uh fifteen when he met me and really wanted to date. So we dated awhile and then got married. PH: Well tell me more about the, your courtship. DH: Oh, it was to the movie and in those days that's , that was in 1943 so we just went to the movie and church singings and so forth. PH: Right. When you got married, what was he doing when you married? DH: On my birthday, at sixteen, I was sixteen, he went, was drafted and he left going to the military and six months later he came home and we got married. So, I've been a child bride. PH: And a military wife. DH: And a military wife. PH: When he got drafted did you go with him? Stay home? Or? DH: Well- PH: At that point. DH: -see, he had been in six months so, uh he took me with him about two months after we married. PH: Where did you go? DH: To Atlanta, Georgia and we lived Lawson General Hospital. And that's where we lived for about four year. Then he moved out to Memphis, Tennessee to a hospital to work there. He's been a medic all the way through. PH: Did you have children? DH: We had one daughter. PH: When was she born? DH: December 23, 1944.
