The Pumping Station at Cox’s Creek was responsible for filling Florence’s first water tower with water from the creek. Some of the people posing for this photograph are believed to have been employees of the pumping station. The Pumping Station was built in 1890 for the Florence Water Company. It was located two miles north of Florence on Cypress Creek, near the mouth of Cox’s Creek. The station was built of brick and equipped with state-of-the-art engines. The station engineer’s house was located on the pumping station grounds. The capacity of the pumps was 3,000,000 gallons a day. Water was pumped from Cypress Creek to the big stone water tower which still stands on Seymour Street, which was also built in 1890. |
