Letter to Mary (Mollie) Mason Beckwith from T. B. Bond dated March 22, 1883March 22d 1883
Mrs Beckwith
I herewith enclose to you a synopsis of
the very interesting history of old “Gunston Hall”, with
an account of its founders and early occupants;
by John Esten Cook [Cooke]. I have derived much
pleasure from its re-perusal, and in writing
out its chief incidents, and its almost sacred
remeniscences[sic] of a past generation, who were
doubtless your ancestry; and near relatives
of my grandmother, who named her second
daughter “Helen Mason”, for one of the Mrs Masons
of this noble old family, and of whom I have
often heard her speak as relatives, and
whom she visited (doubtless, at Gunston Hall)
when she accompanied her husband Govenor[sic],
Thomas Burke, to Washington, as a member
of Congress from North Carolina.
Hoping that you will find the compendium
sufficiently full, embracing as it does all the
chief points of interest, connected with the
old Mansion, and its renowned owners.
I remain
With High consideration
Your Friend
