He was the founder of the Avondale Land Company; was with the Avondale Mills for years; one of the founders of the Birmingham Gas and Electric Light Company and the Birmingham Chain Works; was president of the Central Coal Company and of the Birmingham Insurance Company; and a director of the Birmingham National and the Alabama National Bank. The B. F. Roden Grocery Company, founded by him as a retail store, developed into a great wholesale concern, of which he was president at the time of his death. He also constructed the first street car system in Birmingham and operated it for a number of years. |
