Black and white photograph of gas station with cars filling up with gas and a church in the background. Location is 2606 18th Street, Homewood, on the corner of 18th Street, South, at 26th Avenue, South. The church behind the gas station is Union Baptist Church located at 1731 26th Avenue, South, in Homewood. The 1929 edition of the Sanborn atlases identifies it as First Baptist Church (Colored); it does not add a more specific name such as “…of Rosedale” or “…of Homewood.” The 1950 edition of the Sanborn uses the same identification; however, the 1950 Birmingham Suburban Directory calls it “Union Baptist Church.” |
