Box 3 Folder 38: "Up to folder 38 is 1957. It is a picture of Birmingham City Hall and it’s a breakdown of the budget from Birmingham City Hall from 1957. The city commission at that time, 1957, they were moving away from the city commission I believe. They had a three man city commission. Anybody’s name that we recognize here? Department of Finance. Department of Public Improvement. Department of Public Safety. Health, Education. Parks and Recreation. But I don’t see Bull Connor on here. I thought I would have seen Bull Connor. “The city maintains in 1957 48 elementary and 8 high schools for whites, and 36 elementary and 3 high schools for Negroes. The average daily attendance was 33,651 in white schools and 25,753 in the Negro schools. Last year (1956) there were 1,459 white high school graduates and 833 Negro high school graduates.” Ok. Anyway for someone who’s interested. “The 1957 municipal tax dollar condensed statistical and operational data flyer or manual.” This is when James W. Morgan was mayor. Robert Lindberg was associate commissioner and JT Wagner was associate commissioner. It was a three commissioner city executive and there was no city council. Found at Reed Books. Jim Reed probably donated it. Probably found when his shop was on First Avenue North." |
