Box 3 Folder 37: "We’re now up to folder 37 which is a picture of Eddie Castleberry back in 1956 at WMBM in Miami with his 45s. He's left Birmingham and he's not coming back. When I talked to Eddie, he mentioned that he liked to play the Clovers, and it’s obvious that what he’s got in his hand, and what he has on the transcription player, are two Atlantic 45s. They are light color which leaves me to believe they are yellow label 45s, which also leads me to believe that this picture would not be any later than 1955-1956. (Devil or Angel by the Clovers was on yellow Atlantic from January of '56.) Eddie Castleberry’s history is located in the archives of the Birmingham Black Radio Museum with where he was and when he was wherever he was. We interviewed him twice, once in the early 1990's when he visited WJLD and later in the 90's by phone when he was living in New York City. But we do know that this picture was from WMBM, Miami in Florida. Roy Wood suggests this was a Johnston (the second and long time owner of WJLD and other Birmingham properties) owned property, which could be the case since Bob Umbach ended up there too. Castleberry's archival materials are held at Indiana University at Bloomington.
Also in this folder are documents sent by Eddie Castleberry to Bob Friedman around the time of his visit to Birmingham in 1992. These documents, including a personal letter to Bob Friedman, give witness not only to his early history at WEDR and WJLD, but his extensive career at other stations and radio networks." |
