This document is a letter written across a series of 5 postcards from Paul C. Arnold to Stella Arnold White from Is-sur-Tille, France. The postcards are undated, but based on context and other correspondence they were almost certainly sent in June or July of 1919. The first postcard shows a black and white image of a photograph of a town scene of Is-sur-Tille featuring shepherds with their sheep and a few herding dogs with a caption of "L. Bardet, édit. Is-sur-Tille" and a second caption of "IS-sur-TILLE (Côte-d'Or) Fausse Rivière". The second postcard shows a black and white image of a photograph of people gathering on a walkway in Is-sur-Tille with a caption of "L. Bardet, édit. Is-sur-Tille" and a second caption of "IS-sur-TILLE (Côte-d'Or) -- Promenade des Capucins". The third postcard shows a black and white image of a photograph of water flowing into a sluice in Is-sur-Tille with a caption of "IS-sur-TILLE (Côte-d'Or) Ecluses de la Tour" and a second caption of "Edit." followed by an illegible name beginning with the letter "N". The fourth postcard shows a black and white image of a photograph of a school in Is-sur-Tille with people in front of the building with a caption of "IS-sur-TILLE (Côte-d'Or) -- Ecole Communale" and a second caption of "L. Bardet, édit. Is-sur-Tille". The fifth postcard shows a black and white image of a church in Is-sur-Tille with people walking in the foreground with a caption of IS-sur-TILLE (Côte-d'Or) Eglise et Asile" and a second caption of "L. Bardet, édit. Is-sur-Tille". Paul C. Arnold writes about his upcoming expected return home, his plans following his return, and a nice dinner he ate the previous day. The White family has ties back to the Arnold family through Stella Arnold White. Arnold family siblings Stella Arnold White, Paul C. Arnold, Claud Arnold, and Ada Arnold Sides stayed in close contact throughout their adult lives. Stella Arnold White married Leonard H. White Sr., an inventor who started the Birmingham Fabricating Company. During the First World War, Paul Arnold served in the military with the American Expeditionary Forces and saw action in France. Leonard H. White Sr. also enlisted during the First World War but was not sent overseas. |
