Description
Summary:This image is a watercolor conceptual painting of a crematory done by James Streeter Wiatt done during the 1930-31 academic year. The upper third of the painting shows the front view of the crematory with its doors, windows, cross, stone carvings, and smaller upper story with architectural moldings on the corners, sloped roof, and chimney. There is a brazier on each side of the entrance and the building is surrounded by trees, grass, and landscaping, with people walking toward the building. The lower two thirds of the painting is a floor plan with its rooms, walls, corridors, doorways, decorative floor coverings, interior staircases, large central hall, three chapels, and incinerators. In the lower right corner, there is a tattered label which reads: "School of Architecture and Allied Arts, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, thesis project, 1930-31, James Streeter Wiatt, 'a crematory.'" Above the label, there is an inscription which reads "First Medal, " a red star, and an Alabama Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture stamp. The painting is in poor condition with several large and small tears and is encapsulated.
