description This image is a watercolor painting of a highway signpost done by Arthur E. Middlehurst in 1917. The painting shows the signpost on a hexagonal two-tiered stone base decorated with ironwork around the top tier and the bottom of the lamppost mounted on the top tier. There is a United States eagle and shield emblem carved onto each side of the bottom tier along with the dates 1864 and 1914 and the words "Lincoln Highway." The city names New York and Boston are carved into the top tier along with directional arrows and mileages. There are gold eagles at the six corners of the top tier. At the top of the post, there are lights hanging from more metalwork, with a gold eagle perched on a sphere on top of the lights. The sign post is surrounded by trees. In the bottom right corner is the artist's information: "Arthur E. Middlehurst, Cornell University." In the bottom left corner there is a sticker that says "42" and the words "Junior, 1917." The painting is in good condition and is encapsulated.
