Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 61: Auburn beat Alabama 32-22 on February 22, 1893, before five-thousand fans at Lakeview Park in Birmingham, in the first football game between the two schools. Leaning on his walking cane, the derby-hatted referee keeps a close eye on the action. Note: Participants weren't wearing helmets. R.T. Dorsey scored three touchdowns and Tom Daniels two for the Tigers, who had unveiled their "flying V" or "flying wedge" formation the year before in a 10-0 victory over Georgia. From the 2nd edition, 1996, page 57: This picture, taken during the first half by photographer John Horgan, Jr., shows Auburn in its "flying wedge" formation. Photo source: Auburn Alumnus.
