She wrote, in the class poem, "A center of study and learning, the site of our dear Auburn College. Gather at Auburn each autumn, the Freshmen, as green as the grasses; boys mostly with just a few coeds like blossoms amid the deep verdure..." A half century later she told the Birmingham News, "When we were there, there weren't but two autos in all of Auburn. You walked everywhere you went.
