This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 165: Soldiers lived in the Women's Quadrangle in 1943-44, receiving instruction at Auburn under the Army Specialized Training Program. Naval trainees occupied Alumni Hall and called the dormitory a "ship," its floors "decks," and its walls "bulkheads." They also "went ashore" and "reported aboard." Displaced female students moved into fraternity houses, which had been largely emptied by World War II, and the remaining frat men found lodging elsewhere. Coeds also moved into Auburn Hall, formerly a man's dorm. Photo source: Auburn University Archives. |
