Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 61: Auburn coeds of 1900-01, left to right, front row: Mabel Heard, Mollie Hollifield, L.M. Washington, Emma B. Culver. Back row: Annie L. Wright, Lucille Burton, Kate Lane, Toccoa Cozert, Sallie Ordway, Ethel J. Harwell. Auburn's first coeds were admitted in 1892, and Willie Gertrude Little, Kate Conway Broun, and Margaret Kate Teague were among the first to attend a state institution of higher learning in the Southeast. At commencement exercises in 1894, Alabama Governor Thomas Goode Jones escorted each coed to the rostrum to receive her degree "amid thunderous applause." Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
