This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 82: This 1906 team made hoop history, playing Auburn's first official basketball season. It won five games, lost one, and tied one, including victories over Tech, 26-6; Mercer, 64-8; and Tulane, 27-7. Coach Mike Donahue, better known for football, during basketball practice "never bothered calling fouls--said it slowed up the game." Left to right, front row: Dee Gibson, Seymour Hall, Donahue, Bob Ware. Back row: Bill Hardie, Bill Lacey, Captain Frank Jones, Henry Whitaker, Charles W. Whitaker. For the record: API likely played its first intercollegiate basketball game late in the 1905 season. In mid-March, Donahue's recently organized team lost to Howard College and the Birmingham YMCA, a newspaper reported. Photo source: Auburn University Special Collections. |
