Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 290: Drs. Charlotte and Curt Ward, who between them rode bicycles to and from class a total of seventy-one years, stopped for this picture shortly before their retirement from Auburn University in September 1994. Curt, a chemistry professor, arrived at Auburn in 1957 and served as a member of the first Faculty Senate in the 1960s. Charlotte, an associate professor of physics, came four years later and was the first woman elected president of the Senate. She also was a City Council member in 1980-1986. ... "But I guess what most will remember us for at Auburn are our bikes," Curt said. They never owned an automobile, "but we never really needed a car," Charlotte said, explaining they used public transportation--the taxi, bus, train, and plane--when pedaling wouldn't suffice.
