| Summary: | This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 169: Travis Tidwell came out of the Navy in time to become Auburn's starting quarterback in 1946. He ran or passed the ball 339 times that season and led the nation in total offense with 1,715 yards. Auburn sports information director Frank Sego dubbed him "Travelin' Trav" by the third game. An Associated Press sports writer said in 1981, "I've never seen in forty-five years of watching football a better freshman player than Travis. He could do everything--run, pass, punt, play defense." ... but his teams won only 9 of 38 games. One was a 14-13 victory over Alabama in 1949, after the Tide had drubbed Auburn 55-0 the previous year. From 3rd edition, 2013, page 198: He broke an ankle sliding into second in a baseball game before his sophomore season and after that ran with a noticeable limp. ... Tidwell became an insurance agent and financial consultant in Birmingham after a back injury ended his brief professional football career with the New York Giants.
