Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 137: The "Double Dozen," including tackle W. H. "Mutt" Gregory (in photo), helped unseat API President Spright Dowell. The twenty-four student leaders, acting unofficially, recruited alumni and the student body to their dump-Dowell campaign, Ag Hill historians Joe Yeager and Gene Stevenson said. The "Double Dozen" charged that Dowell had failed to get the students and alumni working together for Auburn, leading to inadequate financial support from the Legislature. ... Despite sack-Dowell talk as games were lost, the group denied that football was the basis of student unrest. But ... players complained to trustees. ... T. H. Pearce, a guard and student council president, said the Alabama faculty cooperated with the team, but the Auburn faculty didn't--one reason the Auburn team hadn't done better.
