Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 60: Arms swinging, eyes on the finish line, six sprinters started the 100-yard dash in about 1894. ... The Auburn Alumnus later said this was part of Auburn's first track meet, but Dean George Petrie said running events had been included in the first field day in 1889. Football star "Dutch" Dorsey, second from right, won in 10.6 seconds, and Hinds Peevey finished second, the Auburn Alumnus recalled in 1932, after reporting in 1930 that Peevey, fourth from left, won and Dorsey placed second. ... Runners from left to right are Billy Chears, Harry Smith, "Snow" Perkins, Peevey, Dorsey, and Jule Dunham. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
