description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 144: Pallbearers carried the casket into Langdon Hall where the funeral was held for the "grand old dean of chemistry," Bennett Battle Ross, in April 1930. Ross served as API's acting president in 1920 and 1925. The members of the chemistry faculty were active pallbearers. They included Ross' successor as dean, Clifford L. Hare, the gray-haired man at left. On the viewer's side of the coffin, third from left, was Roger W. Allen, who became dean of science and literature. The second man behind Allen was Carl Rehling, later state toxicologist. After the funeral, students, faculty members, and others, including Governor Bibb Graves, walked in the procession to Pine Hill Cemetery. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
