description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 32: Dr. James Ferguson Dowdell, Methodist minister, former Alabama congressman, and retired Confederate Army colonel, served as president of East Alabama Male College during hard times following the Civil War. After the institution reopened in 1866, Dowdell's pay was halved and his faculty members also took salary cuts to help keep it operating despite declining enrollments. Dowdell resigned in the face of criticism in 1870, and a faculty government ran the college its last two years. The Methodist Conference turned the campus over to the State of Alabama for use as a land-grant college in 1872. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
