This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 339: Plans in 1996 called for this main north-south runway to be lengthened to 5,260 feet at the Robert G. Pitts Auburn-Opelika Airport. The additional 1,260 feet would provide safer conditions for takeoffs and landings ... The extension would be part of an estimated $13-million development of the airport, which is owned by Auburn University. ... East Glenn Avenue would be rerouted about 1.7 miles to pass south of the extended runway, tentatively by early 1998. A city landfill would be closed to make room for the extension. ... The overall project was expected to be completed between the years 2001 and 2004 if funding arrived promptly. Photo source: Auburn University Photographic Services. |
