She received a master's degree in education from Auburn in August 1966 to go with her earlier diploma in French and political science from Indiana University. ... While Mrs. Matthews pursued a doctorate in education at Auburn, history Professor Ed Williamson mentioned her to his department head, Malcolm McMillan, as a possible instructor. She had taught political science at Tuskegee University, and McMillan knew her father, who headed the history department at Alabama State University. ... In 1972, Mrs. Matthews became an AU history instructor, praised for her "'warm and friendly' personality." She later taught history and political science at Tuskegee University for many years. ...
