Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 81: Miss Leland Cooper, left, and Mrs. Marion K. Ashby, both of Auburn, were pictured in a 1978 issue of Auburn Football Illustrated ready for Homecoming. The story states that they were among seven petite coeds who, seventy-one years earlier, "became Auburn's first, although admittedly unofficial, female cheerleaders." The occasion was during halftime of the 1907 Auburn-Clemson game. "They dashed from the wooden bleachers," the story goes, "that early November afternoon with Auburn nursing a slim, 6-0 lead ... Each of the group had sewn one blue letter of the word, V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, on the bill of her orange cap. Wearing light-colored uniforms, they rendered a pep song or two to lend vocal support to the struggling Auburn team." It must have worked. Auburn won 12-0. ... For the record: the first officially recognized Auburn female cheerleaders were Doris Greene and June Tooker in 1937. Photo source: Auburn University University Relations.
