description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 134: More than 625 freshmen began the ODK Cake Race in 1937, and almost 600 finished. Those with medical excuses weren't required to run the 2.7 mile race. Dropouts along the way were supposed to be turned over to the A-Club's hazing committee. Herbert Drake won the race in record time and won a huge white cake and a freshman numeral. The next 24 finishers received smaller cakes. Coach Wilbur Hutsell originated this campus tradition in 1929 to help find talent for the varsity track team. From 3rd edition, 2013, page 154: It later became a custom for the winning male to receive a kiss from Miss Auburn, and, after women began competing, the first female finisher each year was kissed by the SGA or ODK president. The event was renamed the Wilbur Hutsell-ODK Cake Race in the early 1940s, and later Head Track Coach Mel Rosen's name was added to the title. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
