From page 222: Auburn's first councilwoman, four other council members, and a new mayor took office in 1955 after voters approved a change from commission to council government. Appointed by Governor James E. Folsom to serve sixteen-month terms were, left to right: Dr. James E. Greene, W. T. Ingram, Mayor Louie W. James, Bessie Williamson, McAdory Lipscomb, and C. R. "Red" Meagher. City Attorney Knox McMillan (right) swore them in. At the election the next year, Mrs. Williamson and Sara Spencer Roy became the first councilwomen chosen by the voters.
