This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 293: Harold D. Melton celebrated with supporters in 1987 after becoming the first black elected president of the Auburn University Student Government Association. Melton, a business major from Marietta, Georgia, also was the first independent elected president since George McMillan in 1965-66, the Glomerata said. Melton received 65 percent of the vote in a three-way race. ... Melton later earned a law degree from the University of Georgia, worked under two Georgia attorneys general, and became the first African American to serve as chief legal advisor for a Georgia governor.
