Melton, a business major from Marietta, Georgia, also was the first independent elected president since George McMillan in 1965-66, the Glomerata said. Melton received 65 percent of the vote in a three-way race. ... Melton later earned a law degree from the University of Georgia, worked under two Georgia attorneys general, and became the first African American to serve as chief legal advisor for a Georgia governor.
