From page 58: Sheldon L. "Shel" Toomer, a halfback on Auburn's first football team, an 1893 graduate in agriculture and an 1897 pharmacy graduate, became the man for whom "Toomer's Corner" is named. Besides operating a drugstore there for more than half a century, Toomer owned a hardware store, helped found the Auburn National Bank and served as its president for nearly fifty years, and was the president of the Auburn Ice & Coal Co. He served on the City Council for more than two decades, spent three terms in the Alabama Legislature, was an API trustee, and was for thirty years an Episcopal vestryman.
