Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 37: Ashes and scorched bricks remained of Old Main after a fire on June 24, 1887, destroyed the building, consuming classrooms, administrative offices, the library, a museum, military arms, scientific apparatus, and a valuable portrait of Daniel Webster. Rumors flew that the loss might be the end of the Agricultural and Mechanical College. President William LeRoy Broun issued a circular assuring that the institution would open as usual for the fall semester; and it did, with Langdon Hall partitioned for classrooms. Bricks from Old Main were used to help lay the foundation for a new building on the same ground. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
