This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 229: Athey's Cafe "was a favorite 'hangout' " for many of the varsity basketball players and others needing a coffee break in 1952, Jim Martin recalls. The cafe was located next to the War Eagle Theatre and across West Magnolia Avenue from today's Harbert Engineering Building. In the bottom right corner, from left, basketball players Bill Fickling (also a hurdler on the track team), Jay "Bubba" Farish, and Martin catch up on the sports pages. They also keep an eye on Korean War news. Athletes, like many other male students, were enrolled in ROTC and faced military service upon graduation. ... At the next table, the coed at left is Ann Draughon (now Cousins), daughter of Auburn President and Mrs. Ralph Draughon. Martin, too, became an Auburn president (1984-92). During his college days, he met and later married an Auburn cheerleader, Ann Freeman. Photo source: Glomerata, Auburn University Archives. |
