Summary: | This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 231: Auburn first played home football games in the 1890s in the field behind Samford Hall, in those days called the main building. The game then moved to Drake Field behind today's east stands. And from there, in 1939, campus football moved to the new stadium, which boasted 7,440 seats above the west sideline for the opening 7-7 tie with Florida. In about the fall of 1948, people are also watching from the low bleachers along the east sideline as the band spells out Tiger. Others are seated on the hillside. Some are looking on from rooftops.
