Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 227: Navy trainees stand at parade rest in 1943 near the Depression-built cottages in Graves Centre. They were among 6,099 soldiers, sailors, and Marines who received varied technical instruction at Auburn during World War II. ... A company of radio trainees, who had never seen cotton up close (if at all), "answered the SOS" from farmers who needed their cotton picked. After walking five miles to the fields during off-duty time, the volunteers picked about 1,500 pounds in two hours. "It was fun, they said, until the novelty wore off," the Plainsman reported.
