A year earlier, the Crimson Tide had swamped the Tigers 55-0 in the first football game between the two teams in forty-one years. ... Despite the Alabama president's prediction of a 21-7 Tide victory, Tiger supporters were hopeful of an upset. Miss Auburn, Dorry Ann Hayes, sitting between two other coeds, displaying a winning smile on the ride through downtown Birmingham in Roland (Chief) Shine's convertible. Basketball star Don Lanford is seated behind Shine, who owned Chief's U-Drive-It and service station in Auburn. The Tigers surprised the rival president and the oddsmakers by winning 14-13. ...
