She became the first woman inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the first recipient of an Auburn Ph.D. in history. She married George Atkins, an outstanding guard of the early fifties on the Auburn football team who later became an associate director of the Office of Alumni and Development. After teaching at Auburn, University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Samford University, Dr. Atkins became the first director of the Auburn Center for the Arts and Humanities ...
