Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 205: Roland "Chief" Shine (pointing), owner of Chief's U-Drive-It and service station at College Street and Glenn Avenue, continued a tradition that went back at least as far as Police Chief Ben Smith in the early 1900s. Both men offered transportation for students. Smith had rented horses and carriages; Shine rented cars in the 1940s to API varsity athletic teams as well as individuals. In addition, Shine operated a bus service to and from Chewacla Park during gas rationing in World War II. Photo source: Glomerata, Auburn University Archives.
