description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 186: Coach Jack Meagher (behind the center) brought in Jimmy Conzelman, coach of the professional Chicago Cardinals, during 1941 spring practice to help hone the T Formation. Players, left to right, are: end Jim Samford, halfback Monk Gafford, center Tex Williams, fullback uncertain (perhaps starting halfback Clarence Harkins, filling in for picture purposes), quarterback Lloyd Cheatham, end Clarence Grimmett, and Ty Irby, a halfback later converted to fullback. Note the dog at left. Until the stadium was enclosed, dogs showed up regularly for practice and sometimes wandered onto the field during games. Photo source: Auburn University Archives.
