This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 188: These Royal Air Force cadets were much more familiar with British rugby, and although the thumbs-up in this photo could have been a sign of approval of the Auburn-Clemson football game, this perhaps was just the British way of saying, "Keep Smiling!" Thumbs-up later gave way to a great extent to the "V" for victory made popular by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. These cadets attended the game while on holiday from training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. Within a few months, they were directly involved in Great Britain's grim battle for survival.
