Description
Summary:This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 160: After Captain Louie James and his wife, Meriam, were married in September 1942, they took the traditional Caisson Ride for field artillery newlyweds, and in grand style. They headed a parade through town to a party at the home of Colonel John J. Waterman, on Mell Street south of the library. ... Some couples in the parade rode on caissons like those in the foreground headed north on Gay Street. Some rode in wagons like the one turning onto Gay from Thach Avenue. At left was Mrs. Fortner's boarding house. ... The original Wittel Dorm, later to be named Auburn Hall, is seen through the break in the trees, and the "new" Wittel Dorm is at right.
