These images are photographs used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the university. From page 62: Three probably nervous but unintimidated young women made Auburn history in 1892 becoming the first females to matriculate at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College. ... The same year that Auburn began football, President Broun's daughter, Kate Conway Broun, and two other Auburn girls, Willie Gertrude Little and Margaret Kate Teague, passed examinations in math and either English, history, or Latin, admitting them to A&M's junior class. They came on campus only for classes, looking neither to the right or left, and were diligent students though not all professors welcomed them, a later alumnae, Mollie Hollifield, wrote in Auburn: Loveliest Village of the Plain. The young ladies found a friend in Dr. Petrie, but a mathematics assistant "flatly refused to teach them," Mrs. Hollifield said. Instead, the head professor of math, O. D. Smith, "had every girl in his classes ..." The first three earned "grades in the nineties in every one of their courses" and "amid thunderous applause," graduated with B. S. degrees in 1894, the Alumnews later reported. Times were changing but Auburn remained mostly male in the 1890s and for decades thereafter. Photo source: Auburn University Archives. |
