description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 1st edition, 1981, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 150: API President L.N. Duncan welcomed FDR with a handshake as the visitor's Cadillac stopped behind the Quad Dorms. President Roosevelt got a booming ovation from the crowd occupying special bleachers when he started his speech with the familiar, "My friends." In his address he urged Auburn students to work toward helping the South become self-sufficient. He also said he had been strictly neutral about the Auburn-Georgia football game, noting that he was a part-time resident of Warm Springs, Georgia, but added: "Perhaps (next fall) I shall lean a little bit more toward Auburn." Auburn beat Georgia 7-0 in Columbus eight months later. Photo source: Ann B. Pearson.
