description This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn, a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms, 3rd edition, 2013, depicting the history of the city and the University. From page 8: President Harry Philpott probably enjoyed Auburn students more than any other of Auburn’s first eighteen presidents--at least it seemed that way. He was involved, as were other presidents, with scores of structured functions each year during which he met with student leaders and student groups, but Philpott also found time for countless informal rap sessions, many outdoors under the trees as was this one, with any who wished to show up. He appeared throughout his fifteen years of leadership to be genuinely interested in what the students had to say and in providing answers to their questions. Under his leadership, Auburn grew in size and quality as a university. Philpott emphasized research but urged "that the faculty continue to use a personal style of teaching for which Auburn is well known." Photo source: Auburn University Photographic Services.
